Odoo 20: What's New? The Key Features at a Glance

*Updated on 8 October 2026: the first version of this article was written before the release and was based on expectations. Odoo 20 has now shipped, so this overview is now based only on Odoo's official release notes.*

Odoo 20 was presented at Odoo Experience in Brussels at the end of September 2026. The official release notes cover hundreds of changes across dozens of apps. We went through them and summarise what really matters for small and mid-sized companies in the DACH region: the big new features, the main improvements per app, and what goes away.

Whether and when an upgrade makes sense for you is covered in a separate guide: Odoo 20: Should You Upgrade Now or Wait?

The big new features

AI agents that take action. In Odoo 20, AI agents can create and update records, run in automated and scheduled actions, and work with files and voice input. You pick an AI provider and Odoo automatically uses the right model for each task. Agents can also generate images for the website and mailings.

Connection via MCP. The database can be connected to external AI tools through the Model Context Protocol (MCP). Those tools then work with your Odoo data, within your access rights.

AI costs credits. Important for budgeting: according to the release notes, all AI features now need credits bought through Odoo's IAP system.

Offline mode. Users can create, edit, archive and delete records without a connection and rerun searches they ran before. That helps in the warehouse, on building sites and anywhere with a weak network.

Simpler access rights. Record rules are gone. The domain that defines which records an access right covers now sits directly on the access right.

Usability. Several records can be dragged and dropped at once in list and Kanban views, important chatter messages can be pinned, and in the Gantt view you schedule entries by dragging them in from a side panel.

What goes away or changes fundamentally

New features are optional. These changes affect you directly if you use these areas today:

What this means for German companies

The release notes list no changes specific to the German localisation. E-invoicing with XRechnung and ZUGFeRD, the DATEV export and the GoBD-relevant settings were already available in Odoo 19. Test them on a copy after an upgrade anyway, especially if you use the new account structure or the new depreciation models. Background is in our article on XRechnung and ZUGFeRD in Odoo.

Frequently asked questions

When was Odoo 20 released?

Odoo 20 was presented at Odoo Experience in Brussels at the end of September 2026. The official release notes are published on odoo.com.

Does AI in Odoo 20 cost extra?

Yes. According to the release notes, all AI features need credits bought through Odoo's IAP system. Budget for this before you roll out AI agents across the company.

Does Field Service still exist in Odoo 20?

Not as a separate app. Its features have moved into the Planning app. If you use Field Service today, check screens, reports and workflows on a test database before upgrading.

Do I have to move to Odoo 20 right away?

No. Odoo supports each major version for three years. If you run Odoo 18 or 19, you can plan the move calmly. Our upgrade guide shows how to decide.
