Odoo 20 Is Out: Should You Upgrade Now or Wait?
By Christina Berg, Consultant at FlexCode Systems

Odoo 20 was presented at Odoo Experience in Brussels (24 to 26 September 2026), and the official release notes are now public. For most companies, the question is not what is new. It is whether to move now, or let the release mature for a few months first.
The answer depends far less on the feature list than on three things: which version you run today, how much custom code and how many third-party modules you depend on, and whether any process you use every day changes in Odoo 20. This guide goes through what actually shipped, which changes matter for an upgrade, and a simple way to decide.
In August we looked at the Odoo 20 roadmap before the release. This article is the follow-up based on what Odoo has now published.
What actually shipped in Odoo 20
The release notes are long and cover dozens of apps. These are the changes most relevant to small and mid-sized companies:
- AI agents that act, not just answer. Agents can create and update records, run inside automated and scheduled actions, take files and voice as input and show their progress live. Odoo also lets you connect to your database via MCP (Model Context Protocol), so external AI tools can work with your data under Odoo's access rights.
- AI now runs on credits. According to the release notes, all AI features now need credits, which are bought through Odoo's IAP (in-app purchase) system. Budget for this before you switch AI on across the company.
- Offline mode. Users can create, edit, archive and delete records without a connection, and repeat searches they ran before. Useful for warehouses, sites and anyone working in areas with weak signal.
- Simpler access rights. Record rules are removed. Instead, a domain is set directly on each access right.
- Accounting structure. Parent accounts replace account groups for structuring the chart of accounts, account codes become optional, and depreciation models replace asset models for fixed assets.
- Inventory without the Inventory app. Stock on hand and valuation can be managed with simplified inventory management, and eCommerce can work on top of it.
None of this forces you to upgrade. But some of it changes how your system is set up, and that is what makes an upgrade a project rather than a button.
The changes that matter most for an upgrade
New features are optional. Removed or reworked features are not. Before you plan an Odoo 20 upgrade, check whether you use any of these:
- Field Service. The Field Service app has been discontinued, and its features are now part of the Planning app. If your technicians work in Field Service today, expect changed screens, menus and possibly reports, and plan training.
- Payroll work entries. Work entries and the Planning and Payroll integration have been removed. Payroll setups built on work entries need to be reviewed.
- Inventory returns. The return wizard has been removed and the returns process simplified.
- Repairs. The "Under Repair" status has been removed, so reports or automations that filter on it need to change.
- Manufacturing. The flexible consumption setting on bills of materials has been removed (flexible consumption is now the default), manufacturing orders are planned as soon as possible by default, and lots and serial numbers are always generated automatically when an order is closed.
- Payment methods. SOFORT is no longer supported by any payment provider in Odoo 20. German webshops that still offer it should check their checkout.
- Access rights. Because record rules are gone, every custom module that ships its own security rules has to be reviewed and adapted.
- Icons. Font Awesome icons have been replaced by Material Symbols. Custom views and themes that use Font Awesome icons may need small fixes.
One more point for German companies: the release notes do not list changes specific to the German localization. That is not a problem in itself, but DATEV exports, GoBD-related settings and XRechnung or ZUGFeRD invoices should still be retested on a test database before go-live, not after.
How long your current version is supported
Odoo's own upgrade documentation says each major version is supported for three years, after which you have another two years to complete the upgrade. You can technically stay on an old version longer, but Odoo does not recommend it, and the smaller the version gap, the easier the upgrade.
In practice:
- Odoo 16 and older: Odoo 16 was released in October 2022, so its three years of support are over. Plan an upgrade now, and expect a bigger project the longer you wait.
- Odoo 17: Released in November 2023, it reaches the end of its three years of support around November 2026. This is the version where the decision is most urgent.
- Odoo 18 and 19: Still supported. You can plan the step to Odoo 20 calmly, at a time that suits your business.
If you are on Odoo Online (SaaS), the timing is partly set for you: Odoo upgrades Odoo Online databases on its own schedule and notifies you a few weeks in advance, after running a silent test upgrade.
Upgrade now or wait: a simple decision guide
Upgrade now (or start directly on Odoo 20) if:
- You are starting a new implementation. There is no reason to go live on an older version you will have to upgrade soon.
- You run Odoo 16 or 17 and your support window has closed or is about to close.
- You use mostly standard Odoo, configured rather than programmed, with few or no third-party modules.
- A specific Odoo 20 feature, such as offline mode or the new AI agents, solves a real problem for you today.
Wait a few months if:
- You depend on custom modules or modules from the Odoo App Store or OCA that are not yet available for Odoo 20. Your database cannot be upgraded until a compatible version of every custom module exists.
- You use Field Service, Payroll with work entries, or other areas that changed significantly, and you need time to plan the new process and train users.
- You are in a busy season, such as year-end closing, peak sales or an audit. An upgrade needs attention from your key users, and those weeks are the worst time to take it.
- You are on Odoo 18 or 19, everything works, and nothing in Odoo 20 is urgent for you. Let the first fixes land and upgrade in a quieter period.
Waiting does not mean doing nothing. The preparation steps below make the later upgrade faster and cheaper either way.
How an Odoo 20 upgrade works
Odoo's official process has three stages: get an upgraded test database, test it, then upgrade production.
- Request a test upgrade. On Odoo.sh, the upgrade is integrated into the platform: the latest production backup is sent to the upgrade platform and restored on a staging branch. On-premise, you run Odoo's upgrade script against your database, which sends a copy to upgrade.odoo.com. You can request several test databases if you need more than one round.
- Test it properly. Test databases are neutralised, so scheduled actions are disabled and outgoing emails are not sent. Walk through your real daily processes: quotes, deliveries, invoices, payments, payroll, reports and your integrations.
- Upgrade production. Only once the test database works for your key users, schedule the production upgrade, ideally over a weekend or a quiet period.
Two points are often misunderstood:
- The upgrade is included for Odoo Enterprise, including customisations made with Odoo Studio and code covered by a maintenance of customisations subscription.
- Other custom code is your responsibility. According to Odoo's documentation, the maintainer of a custom module has to make it compatible with the new version. That is usually the largest part of the work, and the reason a careful inventory up front pays off.
How to prepare, whatever you decide
- List every custom module and third-party app, and check whether an Odoo 20 version exists or is planned.
- Note which processes use the features that changed: Field Service, Payroll work entries, returns, repairs, manufacturing settings and your payment methods.
- Clean up data you no longer need: archived products, duplicate contacts and old draft documents. Less data means faster tests.
- Name two or three key users who will test the new version with real cases.
- Decide which AI features you actually want, and estimate the credits they will need.
If your system has grown slow or cluttered over the years, an upgrade is also a good moment to tidy up. We describe typical starting points in our article on Odoo performance tuning.
How FlexCode handles Odoo upgrades
We start with an upgrade check: we review your custom modules, third-party apps, integrations and the processes affected by Odoo 20 changes, and tell you plainly whether to move now or later. If you go ahead, we adapt custom code, run the test upgrade, test it with your key users and plan the production cutover so your team can keep working.

Frequently asked questions
When was Odoo 20 released?
Odoo 20 was presented at Odoo Experience in Brussels, held from 24 to 26 September 2026, and the official release notes are dated September 2026.
Do I have to upgrade to Odoo 20 right away?
No. Odoo supports each major version for three years, and you then have two more years to complete the upgrade. Odoo Online databases are upgraded on Odoo's schedule, but on Odoo.sh or on-premise you choose the timing. If you run Odoo 16 or 17, plan the move soon.
Will my custom modules still work in Odoo 20?
Not automatically. Custom code has to be adapted by its maintainer, and modules with their own security rules need extra work because record rules have been replaced by domains on access rights. Customisations made with Odoo Studio are covered by Odoo's upgrade service.
Is the upgrade free?
For Odoo Enterprise customers, the upgrade service itself is included in the subscription. What costs time and money is adapting custom code, testing and training. A clear inventory of your modules and processes keeps that effort predictable.
What happens to the Field Service app in Odoo 20?
The Field Service app has been discontinued, and its features are now part of the Planning app. Companies using Field Service should test their technician workflows on an upgraded test database and plan user training before upgrading production.
Do the AI features in Odoo 20 cost extra?
According to the official release notes, all AI features now need credits, which are bought through Odoo's in-app purchase system. Estimate the volume you need before rolling AI out across teams.
Plan your Odoo 20 move with a clear answer
Odoo 20 is a solid release with genuinely useful features, but the right time to move depends on your setup, not on the launch date. A short upgrade check tells you whether to go now, what it will involve, and what to prepare if you wait.
